    Peverelist - ‘Infinity Is Now’

    Peverelist

While much of the dubstep I’ve heard this year has been self-cannibalising crap, there’s still the odd pocket of resistance in the genre if you look (hard). Take Bristol’s Peverelist who is one of those producers doing the right thing and mixing the distinctive positives of dubstep with early 90s ambient electronica wigouts. Well that’s what the near nine minute ‘Infinity Is Now’ sounds like; some hybrid between techno/ dubstep and Aphex Twin’s Selected Ambient Works Vol. 2. Groovy.

    Independent’s Day this Sunday

    Posted: December 3rd, 2008, 10:57am MST by nialler9

Independent’s Day is a day long fair of independent records, DIY zines, radical books, info stalls, workshops, film screenings, crafts and more. taking place Sunday 7th December 2008 at the Dublin Food Co-op, 12 Newmarket, Dublin 8. More info after the jump.

Many Irish independent record labels will have stalls on the day, including The Richter Collective, Rimbaud Records & Stitchy Press. Info stalls will also be provided by Animal Rights groups, Seomra Spraoi and the Forgotten Zine library.

Along with stalls there will also be workshops focusing on self-publishing and community media , a film screening by young Irish film maker Dylan Haskins of his documentary about Do-It-Yourself culture: Roll Up Your Sleeves: The DIY Counterculture.

    Workshops

    History of Zines by Willie
Willie presents a history of zines. Willie for many years produced his own zine Non-Plastique (an early influence on Loserdom zine!). He also ran his own zine distro Ultra Red Star, before setting up with wife Natalia Red Ink radical books and zine shop (between 2004-2006), they now run their own publishing/record label Stitchy Press. He’s one of the few Irish zinesters who can claim to have taken part in a zine speaking tour of the USA with a van-load of other zinesters. He also plays/played in numerous Irish Do-It-Yourself punk bands Bambi, Boneyard Witch and Oak.

Feminism and Publishing by The RAG
The RAG (Radical Anarcha-feminist Group) is a Dublin-based collective who publish their own zine dealing with womens issues and discussions of feminism in the modern context. Here members of the collective discuss notable feminist press, experiences of publishing The Rag, why print-form rather other media/projects and more.
Their third issue is due out the week before Independent’s Day so look forward to getting a copy as well as attending this talk!

Community Television as Autonomous media: Hacking the Cable or Co-opting Video Activism by Dublin Community Television
DCTV is a non-profit co-operative that operates a 24 hour a day, 7 day a week ad-free television station broadcasting to more than ¼ million Irish households.

This workshop will look at the first year of DCTV, the structures that have evolved and strategies used to create an ‘autonomous media space’ and the key issues the station faces: technical barriers to production, professionalism vs. Volunteerism, localism and informal hierarchies amongst others.

While some of those who work with DCTV will identify with a zine / activist culture , is this relevant in an organisation with paid staff and a budget of 100s of thousands of euro. Presented by DCTV members.

Apologies for the lateness in this here podcast. We’ve spilled over into December but that’s OK as I’m about to kick the Irish end of year albums and songs poll off this week so the next podcast will be chosen by you. For now though, we have a selection of more leftfield than usual stuff taking in “Malian-tinged sunniness, the electro muddiness of Telepathe, the gloomy ambience of King Midas Sound (The Bug’s new project)and uplifting yet slightly creepy Simian Mobile Disco remix of Deerhunter’s ‘Octet’“.

Aoife Mc who presents is available for bar mitzvahs and radio work. Get in touch.

I wouldn’t have had Ezra from Vampire Weekend down for a punk but he proves me wrong by ably joining Fucked Up during their 12-hour gig marathon in NY. Ezra joins the band for covers of ‘Someone’s Gonna Die’ by Blitz and ‘Parents’ by the Descendents.

I forget about these quality Foals remixes but the Ambo gig last night and the Various Productions mashup during the week reminded me how good they are. Two really good examples of remixes that use elements of the songs to paint a different vibe the first techno/house, the second electronic/dubstep.

    Tonight: Beardyman in Twisted Pepper

    Posted: November 28th, 2008, 2:42am MST by nialler9

The supremely talented beatbox MC Beardyman is playing tonight at the Twisted Pepper and judging by his latest set in Cargo, London it’s going to be amazing. During the 8-part video set he takes requests from the crowd and using a loop station does some incredible things with his voice including some drum and bass, ‘Simon Says’, mixes Benga and Coki’s ‘Night’ with Rick Astley, ‘Born Slippy’, ‘Electrobank’, LFO, ‘Oompa Lumpa Song’ and loads more. Just watch.

Beardyman will be joined by DJ Kormac (Scribble) and Nic James (Mud) and Klute (Commerical Suicide,UK). Doors are 11pm . Tickets are e10 in advance or e15 on the door.

Watch this. The other seven videos on Youtube but my favourites continue in the more. Thanks to Cian for the tip.

Portugal’s Buraka Som Sistema debut album Black Diamond came out week and the band have released a 20 minute mixtape full of banging ghettotech tunes, mostly their own. The Kano collaboration sounds really good here and I’m liking Drop the Lime’s dub bass remix of ‘Sound of Kuduro’ It’s an intense skank and move.

Villagers: A guitar and a heart

    Posted: November 24th, 2008, 5:07am MST by nialler9

After seeing Conor O’ Brien’s new band Villagers support Halves (Purveyors of groovy bell action) on Saturday , I felt I had witnessed the start of something completely enthralling, a band that are sure to be doing some big things in ‘09. Essentially, O’ Brien’s solo project it may be but he has surrounded himself with a great band, two of which feature regularly in One Day International. O’ Brien himself is a captivating singer, the kind that closes his eyes. moves away from the mic and still blindly knows his exact position on the stage as he exalts through song.

It was probably Villagers fourth ever gig (and maybe only the second or third with a full band) but the songs are already near fully formed, ready for inevitable adoration. Yes, that good. So good that there were a few people singing along already to ‘The Meaning of the Ritual’ and ‘Home’, songs currently only available on Myspace.

I am not the only one who thinks so. An EP is due in late January. No pressure like.

Ladies and Gentlemen - One of your buzz bands of next year. The Temper Trap are from Melbourne, Australia. They have just recorded their debut album with Jim Abbiss (Adele, Arctic Monkeys) so that should give you some indication of where they are heading. If you’ve been paying attention, they were mentioned by Who The Bloody Hell Are They? in the Music Alliance Pact (hereafter known as MAP).

Even better than the original U2-inspired ‘Sweet Disposition’ is the Curtis Vodka 8 minute rework which turns a perfectly good pop song into a perfectly elongated remix. Lovin’ this.

All the beats from this mix are taken from JJ’s almost entirely instrumental Beat Journey album, only now with added raps and cuts from USA’s Mattic and La Fin Equipe crew.

Deerhunter - On Platt’s Eyott Session

    Posted: November 16th, 2008, 5:50pm MST by nialler9

    Deerhunter

This session was recorded during the evening of the 15th of September at Studio Plateaux, a DIY studio nestled on the Platts Eyott island - a nature reserve with the western end designated as Green Belt - on the Thames - London.

The idea behind the session was in memory of John Peel and his famous Radio 1 sessions. The studio equipment is a rare collection of vintage Ribbon microphones, preamps, tape machines and effects, all resourced over many years and sourced from around the world.

Bradford Cox recorded the songs like a continuous stream of consciousness; the session intended to be listened in order and uninterrupted. Kristian Craig Robinson (Capitol K) produced and engineered the session, while Bradford reworked several songs from Microcastle, a ne version of ‘Spring Hall Convert’ from Cryptograms and a couple of unreleased songs.

    Enclosure: [download]

A monthly feature where music bloggers across the world share a track from their home country that they think you should hear.

This month we welcome Canada and Norway.

    AMERICA: I Guess I’m Floating
    City CenterSummer School
Brooklyn’s City Center is the solo work of Fred Thomas from Saturday Looks Good To Me, focusing on ornamental, experimental pop songs created from found sounds, manipulated samples and Thomas’s own guitar and vocals. While there’s no official debut yet, he has released a handful of 7”s and there are over 30 free MP3s up for grabs at his blog. Look for a debut sometime in 2009.

    ARGENTINA: Zonaindie
Sync FilmicoEl Polvo De Tus Sentimientos
With heavy influences from alt. rockers like Radiohead and Jaime Sin Tierra, this song is from Sync Filmico’s second album, El Mar. It was released this year on CD and as free MP3 download from their website. Their first record was published under a Creative Commons license and can also be downloaded for free.

AUSTRALIA: Who The Bloody Hell Are They?
The Temper Trap - Sweet Disposition
There’s a lot of buzz surrounding the new material from Melbourne’s The Temper Trap and no wonder, because the first taste of their 2009-due album, Sweet Disposition, is a delay-driven melody fest. Recalling the sounds of ’80s U2, Sweet Disposition was recorded in the UK with famed producer Jim Abbiss, who has worked with some little-known acts like Arctic Monkeys, DJ Shadow, Bjork and Massive Attack.

    CANADA: I(Heart)Music
Ketch Harbour Wolves - So Long To The Ground
Even by the standards of Canadian indie rock, Ketch Harbour Wolves are pretty under the radar. Dead Calm Horizon is one of the best albums of the year - and free for download on the band’s site (http://www.ketchharbourwolves.com) no less. Imagine that The National were transported to the Canadian wilderness and started writing songs about rural living and you’d have a good idea of where Ketch Harbour Wolves are coming from. The results are, simply put, hauntingly gorgeous.

    DENMARK: Pastries, Peppers And Canals
    Heidi MortensonIt’s True
Highly regarded as the queen of experimental, unpredictable music, Heidi’s website says that she “makes colorful and textured songs with a nerdy and dazed approach; her sound grows from playful experiments and inventive production. Add emotional drive, a mentalist flavor and soul of old cartoon” - and who are we to argue?

    ENGLAND: The Daily Growl
Mumford & SonsRoll Away Your Stone
Here’s some new folky goodness for you. Not folky as in the beardy sense, mainly because the kids in Mumford & Sons are probably too young to grow beards. Led by Marcus Mumford, this west London band peddle a sparkly, breezy, bluegrass-infused folk-pop, and given that they’ve been together for less than a year, they’ve arrived remarkably fully-formed.

    ICELAND: I Love Icelandic Music
    Hellvar Nowhere
Together the two boys and two girls of Hellvar stir up a cocktail from electronica to new wave with a twist of lime. Debut album Bat Out Of Hellvar was released at the end of 2007 and was the first release on new Icelandic label Kimi Records. The band have toured in the USA, Germany and China.

    IRELAND: Nialler9
    Cap Pas Cap
    We Are Men (Thatboytim remix)
Cap Pas Cap are heavily inspired by rock music on the fringes - no wave, punk and Krautrock. As a taster for a debut in 2009, the band will release the We Are Men 12″ in December with one original track and three hi-grade remixes from Decal, Jape and this from Thatboytim. As well as playing in Cap Pas Cap, members of the band run the Skinny Wolves label which releases stuff from the likes of Indian Jewelry, Telepathe and Effie Briest.

    ITALY: Polaroid
    DidAsk U2
If I could have Foals playing at my house tonight, I would surely call Did as opening band. Four young guys from Turin who play “yellow punk-funk” with pop melodies. They have a free download debut EP out now on Kirsten’s Postcard label. Dance!

    NORWAY: Eardrums
My Little PonyI Don’t Know Pt.1
“The band, not the brand” seems to be a statement that will follow Norwegian indiepop orchestra My Little Pony forever. They recently released their debut album Think Too Much to great critical acclaim and new fans include one of Norway’s biggest pop stars, Marit Larsen. My Little Pony are a pure pop band, where strong melodies and interesting lyrics make the framework of their music, but they also mix in several other genres in their indiepop universe, from bluegrass and Afro-jazz to reggae and more folk-oriented elements.

    PERU: SoTB
    Cementerio ClubStereoman
Cemeterio Club’s history can be summed up in numbers - a 10-year career, four studio albums, three acoustic albums, one lengua MTV. Led by Jose Arbulú, they are a clear example that good rock sung in Spanish exists. Here’s Stereoman from their latest album, released last year.

    SCOTLAND: The Pop Cop
    BeerjacketDrum
Beerjacket is a young man with an acoustic guitar whose backing band comprises a tambourine and a drum machine. Stylistic comparisons to Elliott Smith or Jose Gonzalez wouldn’t be far off, while his prolific output of albums offer an endearing lo-fi sound that lets the quality of his songs and the calibre of his songwriting steal the show.

SPAIN: El Blog De La Nadadora
    Espanto
    Profesora De Primaria
Espanto are a duo formed by Luis and Teresa, who come from a small city in the north of Spain. After releasing a series of extraordinary demos, their first CD, Cantando En Tu Siesta - on the Spanish label Birra y Perdiz - compiled their best songs up till 2007. Their music is basically pop, with references that range from Television Personalities to The Magnetic Fields.

    SWEDEN: Swedesplease
    HajenSharks
Hajen has a very limited repertoire (three MySpace demos to be exact), but she’s just the type of artist that deserves the wider recognition the web can provide. She may not be completely ready for primetime but her uniquely Swedish take on the piano pop of Tori Amos and Regina Spektor is impressive. Hajen means shark in Swedish so it seems appropriate to highlight her theme song. With its warning of “sharks in the water, sharks up on land” you can bet this is not simply a tale of danger in the ocean.

    Crystal Antlers

Naming your band with the word “Crystal” in the title seems to be the done thing this year (as “Wolf” was a while back). So far we have Crystal Castles, Crystal Stilts, Crystal Fighters and now Crystal Antlers. One of the more intriguing releases I’ve heard lately is the Californian band’s EP. The six track releases has touches of The Mars Volta (fittingly, it was recorded by Ikey Owens of the band) in that’s its loud and freaky as fuck sometimes. Or Yeasayer if they dispensed with the new ageness and just rocked out in sweaty underground clubs instead. I contemplated just putting up that amazing artwork and saying nothing but I want you to listen to it for sure.

This song “A Thousand Eyes” is actually a little bit like Wolf Parade.

Crystal Antlers - A Thousand Eyes

As seen on Guesslist.ie this morning, Crystal Antlers will be in Belfast, Dublin and Cork in February.

Phoning it in? Coldplay’s new EP plagiarised reviewed

    Posted: November 13th, 2008, 12:55pm MST by nialler9

I just read Hot Press’ Irish exclusive review of Coldplay’s Prospekt’s March EP (Irish exclusive: Haven’t they heard of the internet?). In the review, Francis Jones says the EP has:

…everything from blustering rock riffs and crackling synths to Indian tablas and even a cameo performance from a hip-hop icon..

I had a sense of deja-vu and realised I had read something very similar recently. No matter, maybe it was a coincidence? While perusing my RSS feed earlier in the week, I came across a review from The Sun newspaper by Gordon Smart. Smart says Prospekt’s March EP has:

Thumping hip-hop jams, thundering metal workouts, Indian tablas and colliery brass bands all jostle for space..

There are a lot of similarities in that sentence and it could be down to the mind-numbingly boring music of Coldplay that elicits such parallel reviews, so I compared further..

    From The Sun:

The EP kicks off in relatively conventional territory. Life In Technicolor ii is the opening instrumental from Viva La Vida with lyrics strapped on. ..Glass Of Water, meanwhile, showcases a pulverisingly heavy and never previously heard side of the band. It reminds me of MUSE at their most epic. Synths scream over thundering drum crashes and molten axe-riffage.

    From HP:

Easing us in with a lyrics-supplemented version of ‘Life In Technicolor ii’ and the piano interlude of ‘Postcards From Far Away’, Coldplay then proceed to blast our expectations to smithereens with the Muse-style bombast of ‘Glass Of Water’.

OK to recap the similar sentiments:
    1. The EP starts with Coldplay by numbers from Viva La Vida but with lyrics. Check.
    2. ‘Glass of Water’ is so loud it might shatter stuff and sounds like Muse. Check.
    3. The only extra reference in the HP review is to the piano interlude of ‘Postcards From Far Away’ which The Sun review doesn’t mention. A cursory look on Youtube turns up loads of short videos of the song however so it wouldn’t take a genius to look at the tracklisting and look it up on Youtube. See?

    Let us move on:

    From The Sun:

Echoes of BECK’s landmark hip-hop album Odelay are writ large through Rainy Day. Chris confronts the pressures of life in the public eye while a funky Californian breakbeat and sweeping strings motor the track along. The title track is woozily psychedelic with guitars gently chiming and strings sweeping… Lost+ and Lovers In Japan (Osaka Sun mix) are both just moderately tweaked versions of tracks on Viva La Vida. But it’s the final track, Now My Feet Won’t Touch The Ground, which is the most audacious thing the lads have ever recorded. It begins in standard Coldplay ballad territory with delicate guitars and mysterious lyrics…. Then Indian finger drums and a swelling array of trumpets and tubas arrive to take the track off into an extraordinary place.

    From HP:

‘Rainy Day’ pings pinball like between stylistic forms, beats and guitars clattering into a strings swathed chorus. Things become more recognisably Coldplay with the assured balladry of the title-track. Elsewhere Jay-Z adds an extra dimension to ‘Lost’ and ‘Lovers In Japan’ is refined a touch with the ‘Osaka Sun Mix’. With brass and Eastern embellishments, ‘Feet Won’t Touch My Ground’ brings a last chameleonic change.

    Recap:
    1. ‘Rainy Day’ has lots of styles. Y’know much like Beck’s music. Check.
    2. The title track sounds like you would expect Coldplay to sound. Check.
    3. ‘Lost’ and ‘Lovers in Japan’ are slightly adjusted versions of those which appear on the album. Check.
    4. ‘Feet Won’t Touch My Ground’ sounds different from all the other Coldplay stuff. And has brass and Indian elements. Check.

If you were to take Smart’s review and rewrite it, you would pretty much come up with Jones’ review. By that thinking, has Jones even heard it? On the other hand, the similarities could of course be a mere coincidence. Either way, I got a kick out of a Coldplay review, which is a feat in itself. What do you think?

    Giveaway: Rodrigo and Gabriela CDs/DVDs

I remember seeing Rodrigo Y Gabriela on Grafton Street every now and again about six or seven years back as I’m sure some of you might also recall. I remember seeing then in a small theatre show in Newbridge about five years ago and being blown away by their considerable skill. Foc is a great album too for a pair of busking Mexicans in Ireland. Of course, in the last few years, they have left Ireland and have been playing on US late night talks shows like Letterman and The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and have been pretty much gigging worldwide since.

Their new live album showcases their skill in arena most suited to them. It was recorded in Tokyo and so is called Live in Japan. The album also comes with a five-track live DVD of the gig. I’ve been kindly given 5 CDs & DVD packs to giveaway so here’s the rub. All you have to do is leave a comment with a link to your favourite virtuosic guitarist video on youtube or wherever. I’ll contact the winners next week.

Omar from Mars Volta releases album on Stones Throw

News has reached today that the crazy one out of Mars Volta.. (scratch that.. they’re all crazy surely), Omar Lopez will release Old Money on the largely hip-hop label Stones Throw in late January. The album is available digitally . It’s probably not that surprising considering Omar contributed to El-P’s recent output. The first song we have from the album is called ‘Private Fortunes’ and is the perfect soundtrack to that sick psychedelic journey you had with those hippies in El Paso in 1968 that time. Magical colours.

That El-P remix of Mars Volta is also worthy of another goo.

Hey the blog is three years old today! There are two ways to interpret this: 1) Major loser 2) Music fanatic (Is there really any difference?). So here’s a special post for a special day. Little Joy (A non Gay Dad-related post)

The best album I’ve heard in the last month or so is easily the just-released eponymous album by Little Joy. The band are notable for being a new project by the drummer of The Strokes, Fabrizio Moretti. Although he only provides backing vocals to main singer Rodrigo Amarant and more sporadically Binki Shapiro, the stamp of The Strokes is all over it, albeit a mostly acoustic one. It sounds like it was recorded in Hawaii such is the breezy, carefree tone of the music. It was recorded in LA as it turns out, still polar opposite to Moretti’s normal New York home. The band is named after a cocktail lounge just down the street from the place they recorded the album.

Little Joy is an apt moniker for a 11 songs and 31 minute LP of understated and winsome beauty. It was pretty hard to pick ANY two songs of the record to post here so I picked two at random:

Little Joy - Brand New Start

    Little Joy - Unattainable

Listen to the whole album on Myspace.

The album is out now on Rough Trade / Beggars now.

Buraka Som Sistema ft M.I.A - ‘Sound of Kuduro’

The honour of Fabric’s first proper artist album release has fallen to Portugal’s Buraka Som Sistema and their debut album Black Diamond. Their sound has been invariably described as electro ghettotech and Euro baile funk but in reality, it is rooted in Kuduro - a genre which is thriving in Lisbon’s suburbs but was born in Angola. It shares tone and rhythm with that break-off track from earlier in the year DJ Mujava’s ‘Township Funk’. The album, Black Diamond is well worth a look if these tunes (one featuring the “retired” M.I.A and another Pongolove) take your fancy. They play Twisted Pepper on the 11th of December.
